Emerged from the methodological principles of Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal in the 3rd century AH.

Formally established by his students and later scholars such as Ibn Qudāmah.

Became prominent under Zengid and Ayyubid patronage.

Experienced significant resurgence through reformist movements from the 13th century onward.

Remains influential particularly in the Arabian Peninsula and among contemporary reformist movements.
