Ashʿarī Creed

A creed that preserves tanzīh and transcendence while engaging the language of kalām in defence of the transmitted texts.

Historical Development

Emerged in the 3rd century AH as a response to Muʿtazilite theological innovations.

Developed particularly by Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ashʿarī and Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī in parallel traditions.

Became the predominant theological school among Sunni Muslims by the 5th century AH.

Remained the official creed of major Islamic empires including the Abbasid, Ottoman, and Mamluk dynasties.

Continues to be the most widely adhered creed among contemporary Sunni Muslims worldwide.
