A creed that preserves tanzīh and transcendence while engaging the language of kalām in defence of the transmitted texts.
Key Tenets
- The Qurʾān is the revealed speech of Allāh, eternal in meaning though expressed in created letters and sounds.
- The attributes of Allāh are affirmed as they appear in the revelation, interpreted in light of His transcendence.
- Human actions, while proceeding from human choice, are ultimately created by Allāh.
- Vision of Allāh in the Hereafter is affirmed, as transmitted in the ḥadīths.
- The Ashʿarī position represents the middle path between the Muʿtazilites and the ḥashwiyyah (literalists who ascribe corporeality).
